Dr Fiona Dowman, Clinical Psychologist leaning against a wall smiling

About me

Hello, I’m Dr Fiona Dowman and I’m a Clinical Psychologist and addiction specialist based in Clapham, London. I host the Drink Less Booze. Live How You Choose Podcast.

With over a decade of expertise in NHS and third-sector organisations, I have dedicated my career to helping individuals to redefine their relationship with alcohol and reclaim the life they want to lead.

As a senior psychologist in an NHS Drug and Alcohol Service, I have supported countless clients in reducing their drinking and finding alternative ways to cope with life’s challenges. Known for my warm and practical approach, I am highly skilled at breaking down complex issues into actionable steps that create lasting change.

Beyond my one-to-one work, I ha trained and supervised other professionals, sharing my expertise to make an even broader impact.

My insights have been featured in HuffPost UK and Health.com, and I’ve shared my expertise as a guest on a Podcast, offering real-world strategies to help people gain control over their drinking.

Away from my professional life, I am a devoted mum and a self-proclaimed theme park enthusiast.

I strive to experience life's moments mindfully. If you haven't already guessed, my favourite colour is purple! I am drawn to purple like a moth to a flame. I feel a sense of calm and joy when surrounded by my favourite colour.

My Approach

A purple bridge

I have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of East London and I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I am an addiction therapist, trainer and supervisor.

One size does not fit all when it comes to psychological support! and recovery is not a straight line. I draw on a range of evidence based therapies to adapt to the needs of the person I am working with. I also consider the context within which people experience and make sense of psychological distress, such as cultural, social, religious and racial backgrounds. The main approaches I draw on are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT),  Compassion focused Therapy (CFT), and mindfulness based interventions. I also draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), systemic, and narrative models when this is helpful. I have a flexible approach and strive to adapt therapy sessions and psychological resources to make them accessible to people from all walks of life. For example, through the use of imagery, metaphor, and creativity.
